The Trinity Experience
"Lord, guide our steps, fill our hearts with love, and let Your presence be felt in every word spoken and every note sung. May our time together at Trinity Methodist Church be a reflection of Your grace and a testament to the power of community. Amen."
Picture this: voices lifted, music fills the air, vibrating with joy and spirit. People caught up in the rhythm of praise. The preacher, powerful and passionate, delivers a sermon that stirs the soul. Amidst the fervor, there's a sense of community, of belonging, of shared faith. It's not just a service; it's an experience, a celebration of heritage, resilience, and the presence of the divine. In the heart of a traditionally black United Methodist Church, the atmosphere crackles with energy and devotion. As congregants gather, there's a palpable sense of anticipation, a collective eagerness to connect with the divine and with each other. The music, rich with history and tradition, weaves a tapestry of sound that uplifts and inspires, reverberates through the sanctuary.Amidst the pews, there's a vibrant tapestry of humanity. The preacher, anointed with passion and purpose, delivers a sermon that speaks to the trials and triumphs of the community, weaving scripture with personal testimony.Throughout the service, there's a spirit of inclusivity and acceptance, a recognition that everyone is welcome at the table of grace. There's a sense of communion—not just with the divine, but with each other. Hands clasp in prayer, voices rise in song, and hearts beat as one, bound together by a shared faith and a shared journey.

Trinity Basics: Church History
Trinity's 200 Year History
When Fernandina was recognized as a township in 1807, it was not yet the historic city of Fernandina Beach. Life was hard, and slavery was prevalent in the South. The Methodist presence in Florida began with the 1821-1822 conference, assigning Elijah Sinclair to the Georgia-Florida area. This marked the start of Methodism in Northeast Florida, with circuit riders preaching in homes near Trinity’s current location.Trinity has been an integrated church since 1822. During the Civil War in March 1862, Rev. Mr. DeForest officiated at the church. After the war, a white clapboard church was built in 1868/1869 on the current parking lot site. Trinity served the African-American community, with members becoming key figures in Nassau County as postmasters, teachers, pharmacists, and more.On June 5, 1869, Joseph and Celia Emerson sold the land for Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church for $100. The deed stipulated it be used for worship. The current brick sanctuary, built in 1891, saw many members volunteer their labor.A Boston newspaper in 1891 noted the church’s vibrant congregation and spirited singing. The Rev. January Felder, who witnessed the original deed, led the church then. By 1892, the present red brick building was completed, funded by freedmen and women. Unique features included curved pews and stained glass windows from Philadelphia. From 1900 to the mid-1960s, the church grew, adding a parlor and bathrooms before 1950. Attendance peaked with up to three services featuring live music. However, by the 1970s, attendance declined. A major restoration project, completed in 2000, revived the church with support from the State of Florida, Memorial Methodist Church, and community leaders.Despite roof damage from hurricanes in 2017, Pastor Granardo Felix’s arrival in 2018 spurred membership growth and a successful building campaign. The church raised funds for roof and interior restoration, completed with an insurance award and member contributions.Throughout its history, Trinity has been blessed by God and remains committed to making disciples. Today, our diverse congregation shares a common goal of deepening our relationship with Christ and spreading His love.

Sermon: "The Waiting is Over"
Scripture: Acts 2:1-4
With Rev. Dr. Elston Perry
Acts 2:1–4 On the day of Pentecost, the disciples were gathered together when a sudden sound like a mighty wind filled the house. Tongues of fire appeared and rested on each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different languages as the Spirit enabled them. Rev. Dr. Perry spoke to the collective power of all Christians - men and women of all races and heritage - to listen carefully for the 'mighty wind' in their own lives and faith."Pentecost" comes from the Greek word pentēkostē, meaning "fiftieth." It refers to the Jewish festival held 50 days after Passover, originally called the Feast of Weeks (Shavuot in Hebrew). It celebrated the end of the grain harvest and later came to commemorate the giving of the Law to Moses at Mount Sinai. In the Christian context, Pentecost marks 50 days after Jesus’ resurrection (Easter) and is celebrated as the day the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles, empowering them to begin spreading the gospel. It’s considered the birth of the Christian Church. The disciples gathered in an upper room in Jerusalem where they prayed constantly together—men and women, including Mary the mother of Jesus—waiting for what Jesus had promised.
Sermon: "Wait for It!"
Scripture: Acts 1:4-5
With Pastor Granardo Felix
Acts 1:4–5 Jesus tells his disciples to stay in Jerusalem and wait for the gift God promised — the Holy Spirit. He reminds them that while John baptized with water, they will soon be baptized with the Holy Spirit. Pastor Felix simplifies these passages by asking us to "wait for it": the Holy Spirit often works on a schedule different than our own.
Sermon: "Thank You for Your Service"
Scripture: Luke 24:36–49
With Pastor Granardo Felix
2 Timothy 2:3–10 Paul urges Timothy to endure hardship like a soldier, athlete, and farmer—each one requiring discipline, focus, and patience. He emphasizes loyalty to Christ, avoiding distraction, and striving with integrity. Paul endures suffering for the sake of the gospel so that others may find salvation in Christ. The message is clear: persevere through suffering because the mission—eternal glory through Jesus—is worth it. Pastor Felix amplifies these passages by reminding us that suffering is indeed part of our mission, and that we too are disciples.
Sermon: "What Does It Take to Believe?"
Scripture: Luke 24:36–49
With Pastor Granardo Felix
Luke 24:36–49 After His resurrection Jesus appears to His disciples. At first, they are frightened, thinking He is a ghost. He reassures them - meeting them with calm and comfort - by showing His wounds and eating fish in front of them. He explains that everything written about Him in the Scriptures had to be fulfilled — His suffering, resurrection, and the call to preach repentance and forgiveness. He promises to send the Holy Spirit to empower them. Pastor Felix reminds us that His reassurance speaks to our modern fears, showing us that we’re not alone, and calls us to live with peace, purpose, and courage.
Sermon: "Will You Go? The Great Commission"
Scripture: Matthew 28:16-20
With Pastor Granardo Felix
Matthew 28:16-20: After Jesus came back to life, He met His closest followers on a mountain. Some of them weren’t sure what to believe. Jesus told them He had been given all power in heaven and on earth. Then He gave them an important job: go out into the world, help others follow Him, baptize them, and teach them what He taught. He promised He would always be with them, no matter what, forever.
Pastor Felix reminds us that, like the original disciples, many believers today still wrestle with doubts. Our mission isn't to recruit church members, it's to share Jesus with the world.
Sermon: 'Why Do You Believe the Bible? (Part 2)'
Scripture: John 14:16
With Pastor Granardo Felix
John 14:16: Jesus promises that after He leaves, He will ask the Father to send another Helper—the Holy Spirit—who will stay with His followers forever. This is a message of comfort and assurance that believers will not be left alone. Pastor Felix tells us that -- even in this modern world -- we aren't alone. Someone else -- a guide or helper -- will come to support us and stay with always stay with us. We just need to be open to things happening around us that are hard to explain.
Sermon: 'Why Do You Believe in the Bible? (Part 1)'
Scripture: First Peter 3:15
With Pastor Granardo Felix
1 Peter 3:15: This verse encourages believers to honor Christ as Lord in their hearts and to always be ready to explain their hope in Him. However, when giving that explanation (or defense), they should do it with gentleness and respect. Pastor Felix reminds us to put Jesus first in our hearts. And if someone asks why you have hope, be ready to explain—but do it kindly and respectfully. Not everyone want to hear what we have to say.
Easter Sunday Sermon: 'The Happiest Story Ending',
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:12-20
With Rev Dr. Elston Perry
1 Corinthians 15:12-20: Paul addresses doubts about the resurrection of the dead. He argues that if there is no resurrection, then even Christ has not been raised. If Christ hasn’t been raised, Christian preaching and faith are useless, and believers are still trapped in their sins. Those who have died in Christ would be lost forever. Paul insists that Christ has indeed been raised, and His resurrection is the first sign that those who belong to Him will also be raised. Dr. Perry reminds us that the resurrection was for all of us; that those who follow Jesus will also be resurrected; that we will each have our own happiest story ending.
Sermon: 'The Parade',
Scripture: Matthew 21:1-11
With Pastor Granardo Felix
Matthew 21:1-11: As Jesus approaches Jerusalem, He sends two disciples to fetch a donkey and her colt. The disciples bring the animals, and Jesus rides into Jerusalem. A large crowd gathers, spreading their cloaks and palm branches on the road, shouting praises:
This triumphant entry stirs the entire city. When people ask who He is, the crowd responds, "This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee."Pastor Felix's 'Parade' includes four events:The Triumphal Entry (Palm Sunday); Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey. The crowds cheer and lay palm branches, shouting “Hosanna!”Via Dolorosa; Jesus carries His cross through the streets toward Golgotha. The crowd watches as the suffering servant walks to His death. The Harrowing of Hell describes what Jesus did between His crucifixion and resurrection, descending into Hell to liberate the souls of those who had died on his behalf before His crucifixion. The Rapture is the belief that Jesus will return to take believers to heaven, removing them from the earth in an instant.
Sermon: 'The Essence of Confession',
Scripture: Romans 10:9-10
With Pastor Granardo Felix
Romans 10:9-10: These verses emphasize the simplicity and power of faith in Christ. They state that if you declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Belief leads to righteousness, and confession leads to salvation. Pastor Felix reminded us that it’s a clear statement about how salvation comes through faith and open acknowledgment of Jesus.
Sermon: 'The Joy of Forgiveness',
Scripture: Psalm 32:1-5
With Pastor Granardo Felix
Psalm 32:1-5, written by King David, is a reflection on the joy of forgiveness and the relief that comes from confessing sin to God.
It’s one of the psalms where David reflects on his own experience with sin, guilt, confession, and the incredible relief of being forgiven by God, and acknowledges that hiding sin brings inner turmoil, but confessing to God brings release and mercy. The passage emphasizes honesty with God and the peace that follows repentance. Pastor Felix reminded all of us that none of us can escape the need to ask ourselves and others for forgiveness.
Songwriter, Composer, Singer, and Guitarist David Parks and Bass Guitarist Ray Hetchka performed a heartwarming acoustic session of David's songs and personal recollections from 7 - 8:30 PM. The first of 6 sessions for 2025, it was a warm, wonderful evening.
Dear Online Congregation,We are working hard to improve the audio and video quality of our Sunday services. This will take some time. Please be patient with us during this process. Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

Here’s a quick look at the past year:
We kicked off our first Bible Study with Grace & Gratitude in May 2024. Since then, we've held 20 studies and celebrated four baptisms—with four more scheduled next month.Attendance averages 30 to 35 people. So far, 106 different individuals have taken part. We usually have about 10 volunteers, 7 guest speakers, and we’ve made it through Genesis and into Exodus. We may not be far, but this group knows its beginnings. We’ve just started the book of Exodus for anyone who wants to join. We’re also always looking for people to share short testimonials about their walk with Christ. These stories remind us that we’re all human—and all growing by Grace.
Upcoming Study and Dates
Grace and Gratitude Bible studies happen every other Wednesday from 6 - 8 pm.

What was the most challenging thing you faced in ministry during the last year?Answering questions about the denomination's disaffiliation process was very challenging because of misinformation. Many leaders had wrong information about whether pastors would be made to do something against their morals. Our congregation felt that we would continue to serve our community while leaning not to our own understanding but following God's plan for our ministry. We weren't distracted but focused on staying United Methodist and the vision of "making disciples for the transformation of the world".What ministry or personal challenges do you anticipate this year? From a ministerial standpoint I am evolving to the next level of leadership. The first six years encompassed focusing on the aesthetics and the financial stability of our church. We were extremely blessed in years past to accomplish total renovation of our sanctuary, inside and out, with a surplus of funds designated for future projects. The next five years we are planning to build our leadership with a strong focus on polity and structure. Due to growth, we have plans to expand our church by purchasing a multipurpose building for administrative office space, and ministries for children and young adults. What was the most rewarding part of ministry in the past year?Seeing God add people to our ministry was very rewarding in 2024. We placed our trust in God, while making prayer apart of our daily plan. Also, having monthly meetings with my mentor Rev. Dr. Mark Charles of Memorial UMC keeps me focused and connected. I am extremely grateful that Pastor Charlie includes me in liturgical opportunities whenever ecumenical services arise with other churches and faiths in our town. I feel, I would not have gotten the chance to learn as much about our community of faith had I not been the Servant Leader of Trinity UMC.Where do you see the Holy Spirit working in the life of your church?I see the Holy Spirit working in our Strength Through Recovery ministry. We were the only UMC in Florida to receive a five thousand-dollar Grant for evangelism. We have partnered with a non-profit organization named Grace and Gratitude House for Sober Living. With the grant we provide edifying projects that promote and build spiritual character for the men and women clients we serve.I see the Holy Spirit working in our prayer shawl ministry. Our shawls are now sent all over the world blessing people from all economic and socioeconomic backgrounds.I see the Holy Spirit in our Hope House Ministry that feeds 80-100 homeless and hungry people a week within our community.I see the Holy Spirit in the eyes of our young children when we invite them to participate in our Vacation Bible School for a full week in the summer.I see the Holy Spirit when we visit the nursing home to share communion with the elderly.I see the Holy Spirit working in our mentoring ministry for at risk boys when they become graduates and move on in life becoming productive citizens.Lastly: I am humbled by this opportunity to continue to serve within the UMC. There is still more to learn, and there are many opportunities to share the grace of God’s with His people.

3-5 Year projected Vision for Trinity UMC
1) In support of all the achievements and blessings above that God has bestowed upon Trinity this year God has blessed us with an opportunity to achieve what I feel is OUR next Vision. The next 3-5 years we have been praying for the opportunity to purchase the property next door. It is a beauty salon that we believe will be able to provide the necessary space needed for the level of ministry, this goal/ vision is a NEED and NOT a WANT!Trinity has no office space for the administrative offices within our church.
